Rubi: ‘It’s a pity the way we’ve conceded the goals’

The UD Almeria gaffer regretted not having taken advantage of the first-half chances and trailing 2-0 ‘without even realising it’ after the restart.

It really was a game of two halves, with UD Almeria dominating the first, only to be outplayed by Rayo Vallecano in the second. ‘It’s a pity the way we’ve conceded the goals and how quick they've been scored one after another,’ exclaimed UD Almeria head coach Rubi as he shared his post-Rayo reaction. He also argued: ‘we were trailing 2-0 without even realising it; the first goal from a corner-kick in which they didn't finish off with a header, but rather a low driven shot, and the second from our mistake.’

The UD Almería gaffer admitted ‘since Rayo's goals we’ve had a hard time, although we’ve tried everything to find the net and get back into the game.’ After this defeat, UD Almería moved three places down in the standings, although they are still three points clear of the relegation zone: ‘We’re calm, we continue on our way to fight to stay up in the league,’ he said.

Before the second half kicked off, UD Almeria played brilliantly and engineered big chances: ‘We’ve been able to play the best fifteen or twenty minutes away from home of the entire season,’ Rubi underlined. Then, he added: ‘we’ve seen a UD Almería team that have gone all out for a win and have known how to weaken the rivals’ strengths, but all the hard work did not pay off at the start of the second half. We were confident in the dressing room at half-time and we knew it was crucial to prevent Rayo from playing out from the back, but it hasn't been like that.’ In addition, as he highlighted ‘we haven’t seized the opportunities we had and we’ve paid dearly for it.’

Having said that, the Vilassar de Mar native made it clear: ‘there’s nothing to blame the players for as they’ve put in a huge effort and have shown a positive attitude.’
