Diego Fuoli: ‘I’m delighted and grateful for the opportunity that Rubi gave me to play in the Spanish Cup’
The 25-year-old UD Almería keeper says that he is experiencing a key stage in his footballing career
‘I’m delighted and grateful for the opportunity that Rubi gave me to play in the Copa del Rey,’ UD Almeria goalkeeper Diego Fuoli told UDA Radio, the Club’s official radio station as he made his senior-team debut in the Spanish Cup tournament.
‘Against CD Arenteiro, my feet sank into the grass due to the heavy rain. I had to remove the mud from my gloves by dragging my hands along the ground. They were adverse circumstances indeed but I actually felt satisfied with my performance,’ explained the young goalie who just turned 25 years old.
The Zaragoza-born keeper, who progressed into the UD Almeria first team this season, would like to have more opportunities to start despite having goalkeepers Fernando Martínez and Pacheco ahead of him: ‘My job is to give my best every day to be ready when the head coach decides.’
The 1.88m tall goalkeeper acknowledged that everything went against them in the Copa del Rey match: ‘It was a tough day for us; the opponents started with boundless energy and regarding the pitch conditions, they’re more accustomed than us to these circumstances, but that shouldn’t be an excuse anyway.’
Regarding this season in the LaLiga, the Rojiblanco stated that he is experiencing a key stage in his footballing career: ‘This is a great year for me...the stadiums we visited, the rivals we took on with players I used to follow as a child…It's a great experience, and on top of that, I’m surrounded by team-mates who make everything easier for me. It's a gift to train here every day with a pleasant atmosphere.’
In addition, Fuoli has looked ahead to the LaLiga Santander after the Qatar World Cup 2022: ‘It is a very unusual situation due to the winter break. The return to competition after this long hiatus will be unknown.’ As for the Spain squad, he underlined ‘I guess that even though they might be considered as one of those underdog teams, they will have chances to shock other teams.’
