The Rojiblancos are preparing for Sunday's clash against Girona FC, another former top-flight side and the league's highest-scoring team on home soil
UD Almería completed their second training session of the week as preparations continued for Sunday's clash against Girona FC at the Montilivi stadium. It will be the team's second consecutive away fixture in the league and like the previous one, a demanding challenge. Their rivals, who were in the top flight last season, have enjoyed an inconsistent campaign so far but remain a formidable force on home soil.
Girona FC are currently the league's third-best home side, behind UD Almería and RCD Mallorca and also the competition's highest-scoring team at home, with 17 goals in 7 matches. Their home record stands at 4 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat, against league leaders CD Castellón.
After going 6 consecutive league matches unbeaten, recording 4 wins and 2 draws, Girona FC suffered a defeat at the Zubieta stadium last weekend. The Catalan side have since dropped out of the play-off places and sit 7th in the table. Sunday's visit from second-placed UD Almería represents an opportunity for them to bounce back.
Xavier García Pimienta's side will be determined to prevent that and extend their impressive unbeaten run, which currently stands at 9 consecutive league matches. To do so, UD Almería will need to put their defensive organisation to the test, particularly after conceding 5 goals in their last 3 outings, despite remaining unbeaten. Sanse scored twice, Real Oviedo also found the net twice, while SD Eibar added one.
UD Almería have kept 5 clean sheets this season, conceded just once in 4 matches and twice in 3 others, without losing any of those games. In the 3-2 win over Cádiz CF, Chirino scored an own goal in the 90+3', while Pulido also put through his own net in the 90th minute of the 2-2 draw against Real Oviedo.
With just 10 goals conceded, UD Almería boast one of the strongest defensive records in the competition, ranking third behind CD Castellón (5) and RCD Mallorca (7).
However, alongside their defensive solidity, UD Almería will also look to showcase their attacking firepower, something Girona FC will need to be wary of. With 23 goals, UD Almería are the joint-highest scorers in the league alongside CD Castellón. Of those, 15 have come at home and 8 away from home, a tally they will be looking to increase on Sunday at the Montilivi stadium.
