UD Almería sign new goalkeeper Diego Mariño

The 32-year-old Galician keeper, who oozes quality, moves from Sporting de Gijón after playing for the Asturias-based side during the last 7 seasons.

Goalkeeper Diego Mariño has become the second UD Almería recruit of this January transfer window after the agreement reached between the Rojiblancos, the Galician keeper and Sporting de Gijón, from where he moves.

The Galician goalie signs for the remainder of the season and the next with an option for a third. Diego Mariño Villar, who was born in Vigo 32 years ago, is a goalkeeper with a wealth of experience following his eye-catching footballing career. He featured in 389 games as a professional goalkeeper, most of them at Sporting de Gijón, the club he belonged to over the last 7 seasons, including the current one since he was their starting goalkeeper and captain.

Diego Mariño had played 17 league fixtures and 3 Copa del Rey ties. The 32-year-old played 222 games for the Asturias-based side since he arrived in the past 2016/17 campaign. Mariño, who was Spain U23 international, joined the Villarreal CF Academy and eventually he made the leap to the senior team, being lined up on 10 occasions; for its second-tier outfit, he played 72 games. Later, Diego Mariño worn the Real Valladolid CF shirt (28 matches) and Levante UD (57 fixtures).

The new UD Almería goalkeeper has played 85 games in the Spanish top flight with Sporting de Gijón, Levante UD and Real Valladolid CF. The goalkeeper had Rubi as a head coach both at his former Asturias-based and Valencian clubs.
