Ortiz’s testimonial match with all proceeds going to Argar will live forever in UD Almeria history books
The eternal Rojiblanco captain played alongside former UD Almeria charismatic footballers in front of 4,000 devoted fans who showed their appreciation for what Ortiz has done for the Club.
The testimonial match between UD Almería legends and the Andalusian National Team organised to honour eternal captain Jose Ortiz will live forever in the Club history books after seeing charismatic players back in action. Since the Power Horse Stadium West Stand was jam-packed, the North Stand had to accommodate some of the 4,000 devoted UD Almeria fans who did not want to miss out on an unforgettable night. Many UD Almeria legends featured in the game with the likes of Uche, Crusat, Luna, Valerio, Chico, Mané and Juanma Ortiz
Before the kick-off, the ex-Rojiblanco captain was presented with different commemorative plaques from the Almería City Council, the Provincial Council and ARGAR (Association of Parents of Children with Cancer of Almería). All the proceeds will go to the boys and girls of said association. Both teams walked out onto the pitch accompanied by ARGAR mascot children.
In the early stages of the match, the hymn of UD Almeria was performed by its song writer Guillermo Fernández Rojas and singer Marisol Ruiz. Then, after taking some photos, Ortiz grabbed the mic and told the fans: ‘You're the ones who deserve the first applause of the night because all the proceeds will go to the ARGAR association, the key protagonists of today's match.’ His voice was choked with emotion: ‘Long live Almería and long live UD Almería. We’re the best city in the world.’ The loyal supporters gave him a standing ovation in the wake of his words.
The UD Almería legends Starting XI was formed by Valerio in goal, defenders Manolo Gaspar, Sena, Chico Flores and Mané. Olivares, Rubén and Ortiz Bernal played in the midfield. Crusat, Uche and Luna were up front. Casuco and Francisco were their coaches. It was a line-up including many well-known names of unquestionable quality. If only we can turn back time, they would surely do great competing in the current LaLiga Santander. On the other hand, The Andalusian National Team counted on legends Calatayud, Juanito, Antoñito, Capel and Bodipo, to name but a few.
The game began and the first chances were whipped in very soon. Uche blew his opportunity to score from the edge of the box and put Calatayud to the test; Ortiz could have netted within 24 minutes, but once again, the Andalusian team goalkeeper made a great save after a great play by the former UD Almería player. With half an hour gone, Andalusian legend Antoñito grabbed the opener. During the opening 40 minutes that the first half lasted, players like Crusat, Uche, Luna, Valerio, Mané... were subbed, who received enthusiastic ovations as they were heading down the tunnel. Ricardo Molina, Peralta, Esteban, Jaime, Gorri, Juanma Ortiz came on from the bench.
The game became more lively in the second period. Ortiz created a few shots on goal looking for a leveller; a ball hit the woodwork on 63 minutes, shortly after a volley from the front did not find its way. Finally, in the 65th minute, the great moment of the night that everyone was waiting for impatiently was experienced; José Ortiz scored a penalty. This led to rapturous ovations while the footballer was being tossed up in the air by other players. After scoring and before getting benched, an emotional Ortiz kissed the grass when the fans were chanting his name.
The Stadium resounded with rousing cheers and thunderous applause. Without a doubt, it was an unforgettable testimonial match that a footballer that made his mark on UD Almeria club history will always remember. The fact that all proceeds will go to the ARGAR Association was also a source of immense satisfaction.
