Fernando: 'This is a scenario we would've taken at the start of the league'

The UD Almería goalkeeper and skipper believes that his team's run over these 14 LaLiga Santander Matchdays is worthy of note

Fernando Martínez has been interviewed by UDA Radio, the Club's official station, to provide his assessment of these 14 LaLiga Santander Matchdays. The Rojiblancos’ skipper made it clear: ‘Anyone would’ve taken this scenario at the start of the season to be in the situation we find ourselves in, with 16 points, 5 points away from relegation places, although there’s still a long way to go. We've only had 14 Matchdays.’

The Murcia native custodian highlighted their fine form at home: ‘We’re a team that has become strong on home soil, with 5 victories, 4 of them on the bounce. Other teams feel respect for our performances as hosts when they visit the Power Horse Stadium.’

The 32-year-old keeper, who has regretted being knocked out of the Spanish Cup, knows that there is still room for improvement in this winter break: ‘Perhaps, trying to win or get points away from home. We're highly likely to achieve the objective when it comes to getting better on the trips. Fernando has also recognised that the team has a defined style of play but that they know how to adapt to any opposition, and considers that they are going on holiday just when they had already picked up better team dynamics in the league: ‘It's such a pity this break coming now because I guess this was a good time for us in the campaign.’

Regarding the next rivals after the Qatar World Cup 2022, the UD Almeria man in the nets stressed that it will be of the utmost importance to be focused and feeling competitive: ‘We must come back fully psyched because a tough game against direct rivals Cádiz CF is awaiting on our return.’

Fernando Martínez has also shared his positive thoughts about the role the Spain squad will play throughout the World Cup in Qatar: ‘The Spanish team aren’t favorites like in the past years, but in the Euro Cup, the situation was similar and they went far. I truly hope the same thing happens this time.’
