Luis Suárez: ‘Returning to LaLiga and joining this great project is extraordinarily exciting’

The Colombian centre-forward has been presented by UD Almeria Managing Director Mohamed El Assy as a new UD Almería player.

Luis Suárez’s face was glowing with happiness and enthusiasm during his presentation as a new UD Almería player. The Colombian striker was accompanied by Club’s Managing Director Mohamed El Assy, who gave a very positive assessment of the signing of a footballer ‘whom we wanted to sign in 2019 when we arrived at the Club.’

‘I’ve felt very welcomed by my team-mates, management, the city... so I’d like to say thank you,’ said Luis Suárez before answering questions from the media.

The Santa Marta native centre-forward was asked why he opted for UD Almeria’s offer and replied ‘it’s a really exciting project, it’s no secret to anyone that the team has been growing in recent years and not only in the Segunda Division, but also now in the Primera Division. The project is very appealing to me and that’s one of the reasons that inspired me to come here. Returning to LaLiga with the ambitious goal that this Club is working towards is extremely exciting for any player.’

Regarding his top qualities, the 25-year-old striker highlighted what is the most important characteristic of his playing style: ‘It’s all about the grit and not losing the ball. I hope to be able to score many goals, produce many assists and achieve the goals set by the Club.’ With respect to his position on the pitch, he said ‘I perform at my best playing as a centre-forward or two up front,’ but Suarez clarified in this regard 'it's true that in recent years I’ve played many games not only on the left wing, but on the right, because I’m a versatile player, but as a centre-forward is when I feel the most comfortable and I can give my best.'

When asked about his UD Almería debut in the tough match against Real Sociedad, the former Olympique Marseille player explained ‘the game was very clear, we can’t deny that we didn’t get the idea of the game and the approach we had in mind.’ He also said ‘I had that bitter taste because I wanted to do it in the best way, but we continue working to give it our all.’

In light of the possibility of El Bilal Touré and Luis Suárez teaming up in attack, the striker stressed ‘El Bilal and I are similar in many ways, yet very different at the same time. He prefers positional play and he is a more powerful player who becomes strong with the ball; I rather look for free spaces and run… so I reckon we can get on without any problem.’

To end his official presentation, the latest UD Almeria recruit looked ahead to the fixture against Atlético de Madrid and the difficulties that they may encounter ‘making sure the fans enjoy themselves as well as restoring our confidence at home is of crucial importance.’
