5–1: Time to bounce back as race for promotion continues
UD Almería suffer a heavy defeat against Racing Santander but remain firmly in the promotion race
UD Almería endured a difficult night in Santander, falling 5–1 to Racing de Santander in a clash between two-2 contenders in LaLiga Hypermotion. Despite taking an early lead, everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the visitors in a match that quickly slipped out of their control.
Rubi’s side started brightly and looked sharp from the outset. Their positive approach paid off in the 12th minute when Embarba latched onto a long ball from Marcos Luna, controlled it brilliantly and calmly finished to open the scoring 0–1. At that stage, UD Almería were in control and full of confidence.
However, the game soon turned. Racing responded with intensity and clinical finishing, overturning the score in just seven minutes. Defensive frailties began to show, and the hosts capitalized with two quick goals to make it 2–1. From there, the Rojiblancos struggled to regain their rhythm, particularly in the final third where precision was lacking.
The decisive moment came just before halftime when Lopy was sent off following a VAR review, leaving UD Almería down to 10 men for the entire second half. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team showed character after the break, pushing forward and creating danger.
Hope briefly returned when Racing were also reduced to ten men after Mario García’s dismissal. With the numbers level again, UD Almería pushed forward in search of an equaliser. But the turning point came in the 78th minute, when a costly mistake allowed Villalibre to make it 3–1, effectively ending the contest.
With UD Almería chasing the game, Racing took full advantage, adding two more goals to seal a heavy defeat. Despite the scoreline, there is no room for panic. UD Almería remain third in the table, level on points with Deportivo de La Coruña in second place. Attention now turns to next Sunday’s crucial home clash against Málaga CF, another direct rivals where the Indálicos will look to respond and continue their push for promotion.
