UD Almería thrash Real Sociedad 'B' to claim their 7th consecutive victory and strengthen their position at the top of the table. Andrés was outstanding as he helped secure a clinical win against the reserve side
Shoulders move on their own when you’re happy. Bulin 47 says so, García Pimienta made it go viral this week, and Almería confirmed it at Zubieta with their 7th consecutive victory. UD Almería just keep dancing, and their 2–4 win against Real Sociedad 'B' consolidates their position as leaders while equalling an impressive record for consecutive victories.
The goalscorers were Cipenga, Miguel, Arribas and Melamed. There was plenty of hard work at Zubieta, as a three-goal lead was reduced to 2–3. The situation did not get any worse thanks to the leaders’ composure and discipline.
There is a difference between biting and devouring. While Real Sociedad 'B' focused on nibbling away at the red-and-white team with attacks, crosses and territorial dominance, it was UD Almería who sank their teeth into the game. Although they were under pressure from their opponents, they never felt they had lost control of the match.
The first chances fell to Sanse. This was unusual, but in the third minute the San Sebastián side could have taken the lead following a rehearsed set-piece move. Kita threw himself forward to meet a beautifully delivered ball from Carbonell, but the Japanese centre-back, shooting from around the penalty spot, sent his effort wide of Andrés Fernández’s goal.
The Murcia-born keeper had to put out another fire in the 11th minute after a hesitant decision to come off his line, which he managed to correct. A long ball found Soroeta exploiting the space between the centre-backs, forcing Andrés to rush out. He initially misjudged the situation but reacted immediately to block the striker’s attempt.
Despite the home side’s attacks and territorial dominance, Almería did not sink under the pressure. Staying firm and refusing to give in have become familiar characteristics of García Pimienta’s team. Right around the halfway point of the first half, they recorded the opening goal in the match’s logbook.
Javi Muñoz cleared a ball from the engine room of Zubieta, and Cipenga exploited the gap in the heart of the Real Sociedad defence. The Congolese winger brought the ball under control so beautifully that he was able to face the goalkeeper head-on. His finish was exquisite. His acrobatic effort—his third of the season—was flawless. In the Basque drizzle, Cipenga looked as comfortable as a fish in water. The goal was a devastating bite against a fragile defence that had just taken its first blow.
The celebrations were interrupted by an unfortunate injury to Chirino shortly afterwards. Jon Morcillo came on in his place, playing on the opposite flank. The substitution coincided with a response from Ansotegi’s side around the half-hour mark. A cross from the right was met by Astiazarán with a header, but his acrobatic effort sent the ball just a millimetre too far across goal to find the equaliser.
Then, in the 37th minute, the shark went after its prey again. Fraga’s poor clearance turned into an excellent pass for Miguel de la Fuente. The man who supposedly lacks a goalscoring touch—he already had six goals and was among the league’s top scorers, had to delicately lift the ball and produce a perfect chip to find the Real Sociedad net.
6 goals for Miguel de la Fuente. S-i-x. And he had now scored in four consecutive matches.
UD Almería’s extraordinary finishing power brought the first half at Zubieta to a closed
Second half
The task was to finish off what had been built in the first half. Almost immediately after the restart, Kita handled a corner with his left hand inside his own penalty area, and the referee awarded a penalty.
It was another mistake followed by another moment of brilliance: Arribas converted from the spot to make it 0–3. Last season’s top scorer, wearing the captain’s armband and striking with his left foot, sent an unstoppable shot into the net in the 53rd minute.
Astiazarán pulled one back shortly before the hour mark. A cross from the right found him at the far post, where he struck first time from close range to make it 1–3.
The UDA Academy youngsters had no intention of giving up and continued to chase what seemed an impossible comeback.
If UD Almería had done all the hard work with the pickaxe, it was now time to bring out the shovel. Real Sociedad 'B' tried to break the red-and-white winning streak by sending balls into the box, but García Pimienta’s team dealt with them confidently.
Andrés Fernández had to produce two sensational saves to prevent the match from taking an alarming turn. He showed the reflexes of a teenager and the solidity of hardwood.
UD Almería needed to wait for a counterattack to finish the game. However, Mariezkurrena scored the second goal for the home side with just two minutes of normal time remaining, making it 2–3. It was a goal born of persistence and, fortunately for Almería, one that would prove merely anecdotal.
Special mention must be made of the players who came on from the bench. Morcillo’s hard work, the experience of Baptistão and Muñoz, Quim’s control of the game and Melamed’s attacking threat all made a difference.
It was Melamed who produced the decisive 2–4. His shot took an unexpected deflection off a Real Sociedad defender before ending up in the back of the net.
It was neither easy, nor routine, nor a fleeting success. The 7th victory had been hard-earned, making it more valuable than any of the previous.
