Unión Deportiva Almería celebrates 20th birthday

The Annual General Meeting of Almería CF approved the change of the Club's name on 28th June, 2001

A china anniversary is a real milestone to celebrate 20 years of marriage. Just as with china, love might be fragile at times, but it is also durable and long-lasting. In this case, the Unión Deportiva Almería celebrates on 28th June none other than twenty years since the day Almería Club de Futbol was officially renamed Unión Deportiva Almería. The UD Almería was born in an unofficial way after Almería CF merged with Polideportivo Almería through the total support of the Almeria City Council whose then Mayor Santiago Martínez Cabrejas put in a great deal of effort into giving football in the Andalusian city a twist. The effective management of Sports Councillor Juan Rojas, who died a few months earlier, was absolutely key.

The fans of UDA have enjoyed the great privilege of supporting the Rojiblancos over twenty consecutive seasons competing in LaLiga: 14 campaigns in Segunda Division and 6 competing in the top flight. Since the arrival of Turki Alalshikh a couple of years ago (2nd August 2019), UD Almeria have made their presence felt in the second tier of Spanish football by playing two back-to-back play-offs for promotion to the top tier LaLiga Santander.
