Promises made, promises kept: José Gomes meets Germán at Juegos Mediterraneos

The kid, who was hospitalised in Torrecárdenas, has received a UD Almeria shirt signed by the entire squad

UD Almeria head coach José Gomes, has kept his promise with Germán, the boy who was hospitalised in Torrecárdenas and with whom he spoke online on the eve of the Spanish Copa del Rey match in Soria (Castilla y Leon).

It all happened at the beginning of January. The 6 January feast day of Epiphany is widely celebrated in Spain. Spanish tradition has it that the Three Kings, los Reyes Magos, are the ones who on the morning of ‘el Día de Reyes’, bear presents for all the children. Because of the protocols in light of Covid-19s, the Rojiblancos could not pay their traditional visit to the boys and girls admitted to the Torrecárdenas University Hospital on that day, however the club sent them gifts and one of the kids was surprised via Zoom by Gomes.

Both were chatting for a little while when the Almería gaffer promised German to give him a shirt signed by all the UD Almeria players and also that in case of winning in Soria, he would dedicate the victory to him, as it was stated during that post-game press conference.

The UD Almeria jersey could not be delivered until this Saturday, once Germán, along with his parents, his brother and his grandad, have been able to travel from Roquetas de Mar town to Almeria city. There were travel restrictions on the roads connecting both places before in an effort to help control a new spike in Covid-19 infections.

José Gomes had originally planned to go to Torrecárdenas after return trip from Soria. To his surprise, Germán was discharged from hospital. So once all the favourable conditions have been met, the young boy not only has visited the Juegos Mediterraneos Stadium but also has received the UD Almeria shirt from the coach. Promises made, promises kept.
