3-2: Controversial defeat ends 9-game unbeaten streak in Ceuta
80th-minute penalty leaves UD Almería sitting 4th in the standings, just 1 point behind their rivals in the race for promotion to the top-flight
UD Almería crossed the Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Africa to reach the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, where they suffered a controversial 3-2 defeat in a match that had originally been suspended on Matchday 13 due to the tragic death of an AD Ceuta FC supporter. The game resumed this Wednesday with the second half, finishing 1-1. However, a disputed 80th-minute penalty decision ended their 9-game unbeaten streak and sparked outrage among the travelling crowd. The Rojiblancos now sit 4th in the standings, just one point behind their rivals.
Head coach Rubi made several changes to the starting XI, opting for a line-up similar to the one fielded on Matchday 13. Baba and Horta came into midfield to replace the suspended Dzôdić and Lopy, while Léo Baptistão started on the right wing in place of injured Nico Melamed. Although the line-up had some adjustments, the team was prepared for a 45-minute battle in Ceuta.
From the outset, UD Almería played with intent, pressing high up the pitch in search of a win. However, just minutes after the restart, AD Ceuta FC took the lead through Marcos, whose shot from the edge of the box punished a misplaced pass by Chirino.
Despite this setback, UD Almería quickly regrouped and went all out on the offensive. With 15 minutes (60') gone, a precise cross from Embarba found Sergio Arribas, who headed the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-2. With the momentum in their favor, UD Almería looked to complete the turnaround. Soko and Embarba both came close to putting the visitors ahead, but their attempts in the 62nd and 63rd minutes narrowly missed the target.
As the match progressed, Rubi's side seemed to be in control, but disaster struck in the 80th minute. Inside the penalty area, Bonini and Anuar tangled, with other opponent going down to the ground. The ref, after consulting with his assistant, pointed to the penalty spot. Rubén Díez converted the penalty, giving the Caballa team a 3-2 lead and leaving UD Almería stunned.
In the dying embers of the match, UD Almería had two strong appeals for penalties. In the 85th minute, Embarba was brought down inside the box, but no decision was made. Shortly after, a clear foul on Embarba just outside the box went unpunished, adding to the frustration of the Rojiblancos.
The controversial decisions and the final result were nothing short of outrageous for the visitors and their travelling supporters.
