2-1: Luis Suárez shines a light on UD Almería
The Rojiblancos clinch their fourth consecutive home win with a wonderful brace from the Colombian. This W allows them to leapfrog SD Huesca and move level on points with Granada CF, the team in the last play-off spot
UD Almería could not afford to let down their hopes on home turf against Racing Club Ferrol to continue their fight for promotion and they didn't despite struggling in the dying embers when the Galicia side reduced the deficit in stoppage time. UD Almería recorded the W which is the important thing. They leapfrogged SD Huesca in the standings and moved up level on points with Granada CF, who occupy the last promotion play-off spot due to their better goal difference.
Rubi had already announced in the pre-match press conference that he would be making changes to the squad list. On the one hand, due to the poor performance in Castellón, where the Indálicos were thrashed, and on the other, because they were playing a double-header in just a few days, as they host CD Eldense on Sunday. Fernando was the main change, but not the only one. Regarding the match in Castalia, Kaiky was also included in the starting XI, in the centre of defence; Centelles operated as a left-back; Selvi in midfield; and Sergio Arribas in the attacking midfield position, in a formation with a markedly attacking focus.
UD Almería, obligated to win to avoid further wrecking their chances of promotion to the top flight, jumped on the pitch with all guns blazing, fully determined to get the match back on track as quickly as possible. However, it all came to nothing because, in spite of having possession Dr ball and commanding, the team were kind of inaccurate. Even though they were able to get into the penalty area, they did so without much danger. Their opponents, in dire straits, who needed to score points to avoid the drop, made things difficult for them since they were well-positioned and in the few chances they engineered against Fernando, were close to finding the back of the net. Fortunately, the Murcia goalkeeper made two great saves in the 35th and 40th minutes. Just when it seemed the half-time score was a goalless stalemate 0-0, Luis Suárez opened the scoring 1-0 with a penalty he had conceded on himself within 42 minutes.
A few minutes after the restart, the Colombian shone a light on his team as he double their lead 2-0 again. Marc Pubill crossed in from the right, and the Segunda top scorer at the near post, finished off the goal in style. It was the 51st minute, and shortly after, Luis Suárez squandered a chance to grab another hat-trick. This time, the Racing Ferrol keeper showed off his reflexes.
Nico Melamed, after 57 minutes and Léo Baptistão, in the 70th minute, following a great play down the right wing by Marc Pubill, could have extended the lead and put the game to bed, but it wasn't to be. When the match was in stoppage time (9O+2') the ex-Rojiblanco Álvaro Giménez made the most of a rebound from Fernando to pull one back (2-1) and scare the Rubi's men and the 8,067 UDA cheering fans who gathered in the UD Almería stands.
