2-1: UD Almería’s missed opportunities lead to another defeat

The Rojiblancos fail to capitalise on clear chances, suffer consecutive ball losses despite dominating possession against Málaga CF

UD Almería suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat in Málaga on the final Matchday of 2025, marking their second consecutive loss in a crucial period where rivals Racing Santander and Deportivo La Coruña also dropped points. Despite a strong performance and clear-cut chances, the Rojiblancos failed to take control of the match and ultimately paid the price for their inaccuracy in front of goal.

Head coach Rubi made 3 changes to the starting XI from the previous week, bringing back Nelson Monte after his suspension, as well as Baba and Gui Guedes in midfield. The team lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, similar to the one used against FC Andorra two weeks ago. The match began under heavy rain, with both sides eager to claim all 3 points.

Málaga CF, fresh off a 4-game unbeaten streak, came out strong, creating danger early on, particularly through Joaquín’s runs down the left wing. However, UD Almería responded by gradually taking control of the game, dominating possession and creating several clear chances.

In the 11th minute, Arribas had a powerful shot saved by Málaga CF’s goalkeeper Herrero, after controlling the ball inside the area. Just 5 minutes later, Herrero produced another crucial save to deny Arribas’ volley from a pinpoint Embarba cross. The Rojiblancos continued to press and in the 28th minute, Álex Muñoz headed a corner from Embarba onto the post, with the rebound falling to Gui Guedes, who was caught off guard, allowing Herrero to block the effort.

Despite their dominance, UD Almería’s lack of clinical finishing came back to haunt them. In the 33rd minute, a defensive error allowed Málaga CF to take the lead through Dani Lorenzo. Lopy had a chance to equalise just before half-time, but his shot from the edge of the area was off target. The first half ended 1-0, much to the disbelief of the visitors.

Rubi made tactical changes in the interval, bringing on Centelles and Arnau Puigmal, shifting to a 4-2-3-1 formation. UD Almería came out of the break with renewed determination, looking for a leveller. The visitors had several opportunities, with Arribas coming close in the 55th minute and Lopy also testing Herrero in the 62nd.

Finally, in the 69th minute, the Rojiblancos were awarded a penalty after a handball by Málaga CF's player inside the area. Arribas calmly converted the penalty to level the score at 1-1. However, UD Almería were not content with a draw and continued to press for a winner, but the Boquerones proved more clinical in the 78th minute, netting the decisive 2-1 goal.

Despite a valiant effort from Rubi’s side, they were unable to avoid a second consecutive defeat. The loss sees them miss out on an opportunity to climb into an automatic promotion spot, as Racing Santander and Deportivo also failed to take full advantage of the Matchday.

UD Almería’s failure to capitalise on their chances, combined with a costly defensive lapse, ultimately led to their second straight defeat. While Málaga CF’s goalkeeper Herrero was instrumental in keeping the visitors at bay, the Rojiblancos will be disappointed with their inability to convert their opportunities.

With the race for promotion heating up, Rubi’s side will need to regroup and improve their finishing if they are to secure an automatic promotion spot in the coming weeks.
