2-3: UD Almería's Cup dream wrecked!
UD Almería shine again in the Spanish Cup against top-tier side CD Leganés, who came back from 0-1 down and when the Rojiblancos had the game under control, they lost the round of 16 tie in 10 minutes and said goodbye to the tournament
UD Almería has been knocked out in the Spanish Cup round of 16 by CD Leganés after losing 2-3 in a cruel and unexpected way based on how the events in the match developed. The Rojiblancos put in a brave fight and received the applause of the fans and the praise of their opponents. The Indálicos, who had high hopes into the tournament, could be defeated by superior adversaries, but not because of the way it happened. After overcoming a 0-1 deficit and with the game under control, in 10 minutes the match and the Cup tie slipped away, not without controversy.
UD Almeria were superior to CD Leganés, they had the ball and the initiative, however, the Pepineros, in the 33rd minute and in their first shot on goal, opened the scoring 0-1 through Adriá Altimira, who made the most of a rebound to put it past Fernando with a shot taken from a wide area.
Despite the 'battle', UD Almería continued to lead and on 38 minutes, Luis Suárez fired the hosts level by scoring an absolute humdinger of a goal after a fine cross from Arribas. It was 1-1 at half-time.
In the second half, the Indálicos were brilliant until the last quarter of an hour. The exit from the dressing room was spectacular. In the 51st minute, Lázaro showed off his great quality to tuck home thanks to Marc Pubill's cross. With 65 minutes on the clock, Centelles had a chance to grab the third and so did Arribas in the 69th minute... and Luis Suárez, and Nico Melamed... UD Almería bossed the guests from Madrid, playing with class, passing the ball perfectly and clearly outplaying CD Leganés.
The 3-1 score was close, and therefore the end of the game to book a place in the quarter-finals. But in a short time everything changed. In full Rojiblancos' dominance, one of the few Leganés attempts took place leading to a penalty that made it 2-2. In the 83rd minute, the referee ruled out another goal against UD Almería, now against Nico Melamed for offside, and within 85 minutes Luis Suárez demanded a penalty. In the continuation of the play, in a counter-attack, the Pepineros made it 2-3. It was the 85th minute and there was almost no time to react and tie even though it was tried. As a result, in the most cruel way, the participation of the Indálicos in the Copa del Rey 2024/25 ended. What a shame!
