‘We really do want to stay at the top of the table’

José María Gutiérrez predicts a complicated game in Lugo against opponents who have too much desire for a win

José María Gutiérrez has given the first press conference of 2020 ahead of the match that the rojiblanco team are going to face in the CD Lugo’s ground. Once Christmas is over, the UD Almeria’s head coach has been able to verify that in the squad ‘there is a burning desire to play again, to win again and to do things really well’, forgetting about the last defeat of 2019. Therefore, he clarified: ‘We really do want to stay at the top of the table’.

The second round of LaLiga SmartBank begins and the UD Almeria side will play against a team who have recently changed their coach. In this regard, José María Gutiérrez has pointed out that ‘we do not get any sense of how Lugo can play right now’. In addition, he added that ‘we have seen their previous games, but under different coach’s commands. It is obvious that they want to change their dynamics, they want to step up to higher positions in the table and it will be a tough game for us’.

At the same time, he commented that ‘Every match in the Second Division is very difficult’. The fact that Lugo is at the foot of the table (18th place), play home in front of their supporters at the beginning of the year and look forward to moving forward, mean that the Lucenses are determined to ‘face the game feeling highly motivated to win’. He also stressed that ‘we have to go onto the pitch feeling as much motivated as they do’.

‘Keep it up’ is José María Gutiérrez’s wish for the new year, which would mean the promotion to the First Division since the team are runners-up in the table.
