2-5: Misleading and tough first home defeat for Almería Women

La Rambla Women’s 5-2 demolition job was not fair following the committed performance by the Rojiblancas. A dubious sending-off of Sarita took its toll

UD Almería Women suffered their first home loss of the season. La Rambla Women’s 5-2 demolition job did not seem to be fair following the committed performance by the Rojiblancas, who used their usual weapons to turn the game around after an opener from the visitors, coming back to 2-1 shortly after the start of the second half. Then, the referee dubiously sent off Sarita and the visitors took advantage of this setback to draw level 2-2 and later make it 2-3 and so on…

The ball pinged from one side to the other during the first minutes. The girls from Almeria faced a pacy team at the start of the counter-attack, however La Rambla Women found a transitional play after which Irene made the most out of several good rebounds. It was minute 22 when it was 0-1.

Far from self-conscious, Álvaro García Búrdalo’s squad continued to add more energy and forward drive over the first forty-five minutes towards the opposing goal line. So much so that Fátima in a header, Esther taking a direct free-kick and Ana Carrascosa, after a cross from Jessi, were down on their luck to find the leveller.

Almería Women found their prize in a scintillating start to the second period. Only four minutes had passed when Irene Mateos dared to try to score an olimpico goal by applying sufficient swerve to the ball and ended up achieving it. This was actually her second goal of this kind (1-1).

It was not enough for the hosts who, after 54 minutes, pulled one back (2-1). In essence, this goal was similar to the previous one, as Esther took a short corner, Anita Paris returned the ball to the set-piece taker and the subsequent well-timed cross ended in the back of the net.

The ladies from UD Almeria had just done something that seemed unlikely to happen. However, it was then when a controversial decision by the ref took its toll in the contest. With 4 minutes on the clock, the Indalicas took the lead when the match official showed a more than dubious second yellow card to Sarita for a foul that in colloquial Spanish language is known as faltita.

The fact that Almeria Women were down to 10 players complicated their game and to make matters worse, adversary Estrella took advantage of a succession of rebounds inside the box to level things up (2-2). Also, opponent Mamen’s dismissal following a second yellow card for a hard tackle on Lucía. The Almería Women’s spirits were dampened and Julia broke the deadlock (2-3).

There was still time to pull off the impossible and it cannot be said that the Almerian Women did not go for it. In fact, Jessi met the goalkeeper in a one-on-one, Paqui saw how a defender stole the ball with everything at will and then it would be Esther who almost scored another olimpico goal, but Isa avoided it.

But that was not the end at the Emilio Campra Youth Stadium as Tamara made it 2-4 in a hopeful counter-attack and Alejandra extended her side’s lead 2-5 after converting from the penalty spot…It was time for Almeria Women to accept their first defeat of the season on home turf. The Indálicas will have an opportunity to obtain a positive result over Granada CF Women ‘B’ next Sunday.
