1-2: Deserved victory over Girona FC fires UD Almeria top of table

The Rojiblancos wrapped up their 3rd consecutive hard-fought victory on the bounce through goals from Sadiq and Robertone

The UD Almería are now top of LaLiga SmartBank league after achieving their third back-to-back victory in the competition. It was a hard-fought victory wrapped up by the Indálicos who played their hearts out at all times against competitive rivals Girona FC. Sadiq Umar’s second-half opener put the Rojiblancos in front and Robertone’s second sealed victory to take 3 more points home and go top of the Segunda Division (1-2).

Rubi named an unchanged starting XI to the ones that won the two previous fixtures against AD Alcorcón and CD Tenerife. Carriço and Juan Villar were named in the squad for the first time after ensuring a full recovery.

The first half was fast-paced with both teams going all out to score the first goal. With regard to UD Almería, the Rojiblancos based their game on a quick one-touch play that allowed them to reach the shooting zone quite easily. In fact, the clearest scoring opportunities were created by the visitors. Largie Ramazani saw his lob go just wide of the post after a counter-attack, while at the edge of the break, after Sadiq’s delivery, Portillo’s low driven shot was blocked by keeper Juan Carlos who was very careful to avert danger.

The boys from Almeria knew how to continue to build momentum in the second period. Sadiq’s red-hot scoring form wowed everyone at the stadium and those behind the screens following another sensational strike to the far post. It was merely the icing on the cake of an action started by Portillo and in which Robertone provided the Nigerian with an ingenious assist. It was the 51st minute (0-1).

UD Almeria had some more options after the opener to double their lead at the Montilivi Stadium. However, when Rubi's men were at their best, Bernardo - who minutes before was saved from being sent off – found the back of the net after a set-piece by the Catalan side to draw level (1-1).

With the game tied 1-1, the footballers from the Andalusian south coast continued to push forward and it didn't take them long to get ahead again. They just needed exactly 6 minutes to make a perfect combinatorial move that ended up with Robertone drilling home to take the heat up a notch.

After the second, the away victory of the Rojiblancos was not in danger anymore, so that these three more points fire UDA to top LaLiga SmartBank table.
