1-0: Those who know how to suffer, win

UD Almería chalk up their third victory on the bounce that keeps them pacesetters. CD Leganés, uncomfortable and tough rivals

UD Almería achieved a hard-fought LaLiga SmartBank victory, the third on the bounce which keeps them top of the league for one more Matchweek. The Rojiblancos knew how to suffer and pulled their socks up to defeat tough rivals CD Leganés, who made things really difficult for UD Almeria. Francisco Portillo became the match winner in a competitive batle (1-0). A piece of fortune and an industrious display were enough to leave all three points at the Juegos Mediterráneos.

Rubi made a total of 5 changes to his starting XI with respect to the last match against CD Mirandes with Fernando in goal; Nieto, Chumi, Babić, Akieme, Samú Costa, César de la Hoz, Arnau Puigmal, Portillo, Lazo and Sadiq in contention for three more points to add. Two shots at the hands of Nieto and Arnau went narrowly wide, while Fernando denied an attempt by Eraso.

With 30 minutes gone, UD Almeria took the lead thanks to a brilliant play in which the ball, after several deflections, ended up falling at the feet of Portillo, who scored the opener through a clinical finish (1-0).

There was a big chance created by the Indalicos during the second half as Arnau’s deep cross from a wide position grazed the post. In turn, CD Leganés were looking for alternatives in their fight to equalise, however the Rojiblancos did a fair amount of defending to snuff out danger and keep the visitors at bay, except for some strikes from afar that were blocked by Fernando.

UD Almería knew how to suffer to get closer and closer to achieving another home victory. A stroke of good fortune in the last minutes enabled the Indalicos to remain in front. Arnaiz latched onto a lack of understanding between Fernando and Chumi and went through on goal, but the hopeful opponent hit the side of the net.

After that sitter, the hosts continue to put in a spirited performance to secure a win. When the final whistle was blown, the Rojiblancos were actually in the final third. Sousa’s thumping shot from the edge of the 18-yard-box went high and a cross from Appiah did not find anyone to extend their lead. All in all, UD Almeria remain top of LaLiga SmartBank following this third back-to-back victory.
