0-1: Almería lose despite doing their very best to win

The Rojiblancos created the best scoring chances and dominated the match, although they struggled against a side who parked the bus

The UD Almería suffered their second consecutive home defeat. Despite the fact that the Rojiblancos dominated the entire match and created more chances, the players from Madrid took the lead just before half-time and decided to park the bus in order to prevent the Almeria players from scoring.

José María Gutiérrez made a few changes to today’s lineup compared to the starting XI of La Romareda. In this sense, the boss included striker Juan Muñoz as a starter, accompanying Darwin up front, while Francis occupied José Corpas’ position, who was waiting for his opportunity from the bench.

It did not take long for the first opportunity to come with the Rojiblanco colours, since, with seven minutes gone, David Costas sent a long pass to Darwin Núñez, who after dribbling the ball within the 18-yard-box, then failed a clear attempt to score. It would have gone into the net but unfortunately was saved by goalie Dani Jiménez.

Almería had to face a visiting team who was piling the pressure. Something that characterises the approaches of the Almeria-born head coach Fran Fernández. Such a situation would lead to a clash in which our contenders had more presence towards the opposite goal line. In the 40th minute, the host team were on the verge of scoring the opener with a towering header from Maras in a direct free kick. However, the goalkeeper was once again successful in making a key save to deny the Serbian.

For the time being, UD Almería were reigning superior, but the visitors knew how to be more successful before the break. Ernesto beat keeper Fernando with a cross shot. It was the first shot at hands of Alcorcon to make it 0-1.

José María Gutiérrez reacted at the start of the second-half making a double substitution. In this way, the subs José Corpas and Fran Villalba jumped into the field of play, while Appiah and Francis would be the players who would stay in the dressing room.

The second period was progressing with many difficulties for UD Almería considering that Alcorcón parked the bus. Despite the fact that the Indalicos had more ball possession and created countless big chances while looking for a comeback, the team from Madrid were demonstrating why they are the side with the best away form in Europe. Alcorcón employed all of his players in their defensive third and they barely tried to attack. In addition, Fran Fernández's men took advantage of the hosts mistakes to the point that Sosa, could have pulled one back after a long shot from midfield to Sandaza in the 65th minute.

The final stretch was nerve-wracking highlighting moments such as Juan Muñoz being awarded with a yellow card and a potential finish by Barbero from the goal area. In this way, Almeria did not manage to tie and the final whistle sealed their second home defeat on LaLiga SmartBank return after the coronavirus outbreak that means wasting another opportunity to close in on automatic promotion.
