‘We were closer to winning, but it was a really evenly-matched game’

José Gomes recognises that UD Almería are not happy as they did not win at the Anduva Stadium

José Gomes highlighted after the UD Almería match versus CD Mirandés that his team were superior ‘due to the number of goal-scoring chances’, although the head coach admitted that this is not enough in football. ‘We were closer to winning, but it was a really evenly-matched game,’ exclaimed the Portuguese in the press room.

In Gomes’ opinion, the Rojiblancos were competing at all times, but the result made him admit that the one-all draw gives them feelings of dissatisfaction: ‘We’re not happy because we wanted to win and we didn’t.’

The Lusitanian also acknowledged that ‘their winless streak isn’t good enough.’ As he sees it, UD Almería should ‘have won more games’ in this second half of the season. Of course, the head coach reflected on the meeting by underlining the positive aspects that his players were ‘good at winning duels’ and in addition, they displayed ‘moments of effective passing and beautiful plays’ on a pitch where it is very difficult to defeat strong rivals who are able to hurt anyone.’ As a matter of fact, the Portuguese had already praised the great job that CD Mirandés are doing ‘because of the way they are facing their games.’

Regarding the fact that Gomes set his team up in a different formation this time, he stated: ‘The idea was to help the players improve their competitive ability because we’re missing vital points as it seems that we haven’t been clear on how to secure a win. At the moment, we’re working on those details to keep growing as a team to take advantage.’ Likewise, he pointed out that this approach allowed ‘to make changes without making substitutions after conceding the goal.’
