UD Almería set for 24th Spanish Cup campaign
The Rojiblancos aim to build on past successes and overcome early setbacks in Spain's prestigious knockout tournament
UD Almería are gearing up for their 24th consecutive appearance in the Spanish Cup, a competition that has been a mix of unforgettable highs and painful lows since the Club's first participation in the 2002/03 season. With a storied history in the exciting tournament, the Rojiblancos are determined to add another memorable chapter this year.
Throughout their Cup history, UD Almería have had some remarkable runs. Their best-ever performance came in the 2010/11 season when they reached the semi-finals, knocking out top-flight sides like Real Sociedad, RCD Mallorca and Deportivo de La Coruña before falling to FC Barcelona.
They replicated that success in the 2020/21 season, making it to the quarter-finals, with memorable victories over CE L'Hospitalet, CD Numancia and a stunning 5-0 thrashing of LaLiga’s CD Alavés. However, their Cup dreams were dashed by Sevilla FC, who defeated them 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
In addition to their historic performances, UD Almería have also faced early exits that have left a mark on the Club. They have been eliminated in the first round on several occasions, most notably in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons by Córdoba CF and CD Numancia, respectively. The most recent upset came in the 2022/23 season, when they were knocked out by CD Arenteiro in Carballino (Ourense) and in the 2019/20 season, when they were eliminated by Las Palmas side UD Tamaraceite.
Despite the occasional setbacks, the Rojiblancos have regularly progressed to the round of 32 and round of 16, with the 2022/23 season standing out thanks to a memorable 4-1 win over Sevilla FC in the round of 32 before falling to CD Leganés in the next stage.
As they prepare for this year’s Spanish Cup campaign, UD Almería will look to build on their past successes and avoid the early upsets that have occasionally plagued them. With their rich Cup history and a strong squad, the Indálicos will be aiming for another deep run and perhaps a return to the latter stages of the tournament where they have historically shone.
