‘The people of Almería are overwhelmingly supporting us and there is no greater motivation than that’

Sergio Aguza states in a virtual press conference of the club that ‘we all have to get used to the new reality’

This is the last week of May and the season restart is around the corner, so that Sergio Aguza gave a new virtual press conference of the UD Almería in which he talked about various topics related to the Rojiblanco club together with the Almeria’s media. The central midfielder highlighted the need to ‘get used to the new reality’ of stadiums without fans so as not to lose concentration. ‘Right now, we have to play without the crowds. Never mind…because we know that all the people of Almería are overwhelmingly supporting us and there is no greater motivation and ambition than that’, he stressed.

During the questions & answers time, the player from the Almería first-team expressed his feelings after the first training sessions in groups of 14 footballers: ‘It feels like going back to school…the first time you see your classmates’ faces on the first day after a break and you get back together. We were used to spending many hours together.’

Aguza was also questioned regarding the team’s preparation ahead of the season resumption. The coaching staff are putting players through their paces and according to Aguza: ‘The next weeks are going to be good for us, but until everything begins all over again, we do not know how we are going to react.’ However, he was positive: ‘The Segunda Division kick-off went very well. After the Christmas break the team were on a winning streak and I am highly optimistic. I think that we will again string together some back-to-back victories.’

Moreover, the midfielder believes that there will be meetings ‘that are going to be decided by small details’ in which ‘we all are going to experience tiredness, although ‘the squad’s quality is going to win out in the end.’ In this sense, he mentioned another key to success: ‘mental health is going to be essential to know how to compete and play those matches. There are going to be many consecutive finals. That doesn't give you enough time to take in either a victory or a defeat. Anyway…it will be very important to know how to keep calm.’

The 27-year-old midfielder, who renewed his contract in lockdown, strongly agrees with the moves that the club is making with respect to the squad of the future: ‘The club nailed it! I think it will help us a lot in continuing to grow as a team because it is also important to keep building on a solid foundation.’

Believe it or not, Aguza, who has plenty of Second tier experience, has never had the opportunity to fight for a promotion to First Division. Now, when the 2019/20 season returns, he will do so with UD Almería. This fact led him to be frank with the journalists: ‘I have been fighting for something like this since I started. This year, we can’t miss out on this golden opportunity.’
