Rubi: ‘We must focus on ourselves, not on what our rivals do’

UD Almería head coach Rubi stressed the importance of staying focused on their own performances as UD Almería prepare for a crucial run of 3 matches in just 7 days. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s fixture against Real Sociedad 'B' at the UD Almería Stadium (KO 9pm CET), he warned that his side will need to be at their best.
‘The Real Sociedad 'B' are competing very well and we’ll have to deliver a high-level performance to stop them from showing their potential,’ he said.
Rubi confirmed that Dzôdić is available for selection after returning early from international duty with Serbia U21. The midfielder had joined up on Monday but was granted permission to return after playing one half in a friendly, a gesture the gaffer truly appreciated.
That leaves just two absentees: Gui Guedes, who is injured and Léo Baptistão, who is suspended.
UD Almería will close out Matchday 22 knowing the results of their closest rivals, but Rubi dismissed any temptation to look elsewhere.
‘We’re not going to overthink that. We must focus on ourselves, on winning our games and not look anywhere else. What matters is our job,’ he insisted.
He also predicted surprises in the run-in: ‘From now until the end, a lot of predictions will be torn up because there will be unexpected results.’
With 3 games in a week, the Catalan compared the situation to motorsport:
‘It’s like qualifying in Formula 1 or MotoGP, those who come out best from this stretch will be in a stronger position for the final eight games.’
He emphasised the need to take it one match at a time, starting with an in-form Real Sociedad 'B' side that has won its last three away games against FC Andorra, Cádiz CF and Córdoba CF.
‘They’re playing great football, both collectively and individually. Their development has been spectacular. We’re warned we’ll need to be at a high level,' he added.
Rubi also highlighted the importance of squad rotation during this intense period:
‘I already have Sunday’s line-up in mind and a very clear idea for Thursday in Castellón. Everyone will get their chance.’
The Vilassar de Mar native noted the strong physical data of their upcoming opponents, confirmed that the team’s 3 goalkeepers will be rotated when necessary, and once again called for the league to pause during international breaks.
‘I’m surprised by the lack of solidarity between clubs,’ Rubi concluded.
