Second spot secured: just 1 point off the top ahead of Sunday showdown

UD Almería return to automatic promotion spots as they prepare for a decisive trip to Santander

UD Almería are back in the automatic promotion places, climbing to second in the table after Matchday 34. A weekend of favourable results saw them capitalise on the draw between Deportivo de La Coruña and Málaga CF (1–1), as well as the surprising heavy defeat suffered by Racing de Santander away to FC Andorra (6–2).

UD Almería now sit on 61 pointsjust 1 behind league leaders Racing Santander (62), whom they will face next Sunday, 12 April at 9pm Spanish Time. A victory would see Rubi’s side take over at the summit, though the margins remain razor-thin and nothing will be decided just yet. As the head coach said after the win over CD Leganés: 'It’ll be exciting to fight for top-spot, but whatever happens won’t be definitive.'

The race is incredibly tight. Dépor sit third on 60 points, just one behind UD  Almería, while UD Las Palmas, Málaga CF and Burgos CF are all level on 57. CD Castellón, currently on 54, could also close the gap depending on their result. With several direct clashes still to come, everything remains wide open in a fiercely competitive promotion battle.

Confidence, however, is sky-high in the Almería camp following their dramatic victory last time out. The team heads to Santander full of belief, but will be without Léo Baptistão, who is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Lopy, Bonini and Gui Guedes remain one booking away from suspension, while Guedes could return in time after recovering from a muscle injury.

After an intense run of 3 matches in a week, the squad will now enjoy two days of rest before returning to training on Wednesday morning at the Anexo. A light session was already held after the CD Leganés match for those who featured less or not at all.

All eyes now turn to Racing Santander, where first place will be on the line.
