Samú Costa: ‘Attitude, work and humility will be the keys to winning’

The Portuguese emphasises that they are a tight-knit squad and states ‘We have to be one hundred percent focused’

If there was an adrenaline test at the end of the games, Samú Costa would blow the device up. The defensive midfielder plays each ball as if it were the last time and fights in every duel as if it were the 90th minute. He feels so passionate about football that he did not asked to be benched, even though he had his nose literally shattered. The Rojiblanco player is a true fighter who can’t wait for the next battle: ‘We really want to win again and we want to play the next game as soon as possible to reverse the latest results. If we’re focused, we’ll win the game’ has commented to the Club's official media. If one of his tasks is to stop players from running down the wings, he clears up any doubt about his team: ‘Losing will always mean losing and that affects confidence but the coach is happy with the way we played in Mallorca and that’s important to us. We lost to the leaders but we played well. The team is exactly the same as before. There’re many games to come and we’re going to move up. I’m sure of it, ‘the 22-year-old reassured.

Victories are not piece of cake, yet they must be sought and you must deserve them. As a matter of fact, Samú points out one of the ways to get back to winning ways given that the team have not kept a clean sheet yet since the league commitment in Alcorcón: ‘The coach has spoken with us about this. We cannot concede so many goals. We had conceded only 11 goals in 17 games before while we’ve gifted thirteen goals in the last nine fixtures. It’s time for a change. Teams put their hearts and souls on the pitch because everything always changes in the second half of the competition and it’s always more difficult to win. We must be as strong as before.’

Almeria do not trust their next rival at all and this is what the Portuguese midfielder stated: ‘We expect Lugo to pile the pressure on us and be aggressive and intense…nothing to do with how they were in the first half of the competition. We’re prepared to compete against them. Attitude, work and humility will be the keys to defeat them. Not only we have to recover our best level but also we must play as we know.’ He made it clear: ‘We can be the best team in the second tier if we are one hundred per cent focused. However, we sometimes have lost our way and it has cost us in the end. We must always be one hundred percent if we want to achieve the goal. We’ll move up no matter what because I firmly believe in my team-mates. People only remember the defeats but these have been due to small details.’

The Aveiro-born player recounts a phone call with his father from last week: ‘My dad rang me before taking on Mallorca because he was annoyed with me because I wasn’t playing well in the last matches. I told him: hold on dad… you’ll see me competing against Mallorca. It’s good to have a father who not only praises you every time you do well but also tells you the negative things to improve.’
