Rubi: 'FC Andorra are one of the league’s toughest opponents'
The UD Almería head coach prepares for challenging match this Saturday amidst Injury woes and mental hurdles
UD Almería head coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia 'Rubi', has emphasised the difficulty of this Saturday’s upcoming game against FC Andorra as his team head into the match with several key players sidelined. The game, scheduled for 2pm at the Encamp Stadium in Andorra, is shaping up to be a crucial encounter for the Andalusian side.
Rubi highlighted the formidable challenge posed by FC Andorra, describing them as 'one of the toughest teams in the league.' He warned that the final 3 fixtures before the Christmas break would be particularly demanding, both due to the quality of their opponents and ongoing injury issues within his squad. Despite this, Rubi remained resolute: 'This doesn’t mean we’ll approach these matches with a defeatist mentality, we’ll go out to win.'
The UD Almería first-team boss praised the tactical set-up of FC Andorra, acknowledging their well-organised style of play and versatile attacking options: 'They play good football, they’re organised and they attack in various ways.' The Catalan also pointed to FC Andorra's dangerous wingers as a particular threat. He expressed optimism about his team’s desire to return to winning ways after their recent exit from the Copa del Rey: 'We’re eager to get back to winning, especially after being knocked out of the Cup.'
The Catalan stressed that his team must rely on collective effort rather than individual brilliance if they are to overcome their physical limitations in the match. 'The Cup has left us with some lingering effects. Mentally, we’re calm and confident, but it’s natural that some matches are harder to win,' he explained.
Despite 3 consecutive games without a victory, Rubi remained confident, pointing to positive aspects of recent performances. 'Against SD Huesca, we played well but lacked a goal. The second half against CD Eldense wasn’t great, and the penalty in the AD Ceuta FC match was a tough blow,' he reflected.
With injuries affecting key players like Chumi, Nico Melamed and Léo Baptistão, the head coach acknowledged the challenges ahead. However, he was full of praise for Soko, who will feature in the match despite the recent passing of his father. 'He asked to be available for the team, which is commendable and shows his dedication,' Rubi remarked.
Despite the pressure, Rubi was quick to downplay any sense of urgency, pointing out that UD Almería remain 3rd in the standings and that there is still plenty of football to be played before the winter break. 'Our situation is not urgent at all. The league doesn’t end before January,' he concluded.
