Rubi: 'We're facing extremely dangerous opponents'
The UD Almería boss praises current LaLiga Hypermotion leaders from Santander and urges fans to stay behind the team amid defensive injury crisis
UD Almería head coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, better known as Rubi, has labelled Racing de Santander as 'extremely dangerous opponents' ahead of their upcoming clash this Sunday. The Rojiblancos manager heaped praise on the current league leaders, who have taken 9 points from 9 and netted 10 goals in their opening 3 fixtures.
'They’re the leaders for a reason,' Rubi told reporters at his pre-match press conference. 'They’ve had a perfect start and are clearly knocking on the door of the Primera division. Every year, their head coach introduces new changes that bring results, and this season is no exception.'
The UD Almería gaffer described the encounter as a must-watch for the supporters, highlighting the quality on both sides. 'This is a big game, very attractive for the fans. Both teams were in the promotion play-offs last season and boast some brilliant players. It’ll be a true test for us.'
As for the defensive headaches... Rubi admitted his side are 'out of luck defensively,' with several key absentees limiting his options at the back. Chumi is sidelined with an ankle sprain, Nelson Montes remains unavailable and Aridane has yet to be registered, though he may be called up as emergency cover. Dzodic is away on international duty, while young Pedro Fidel is still raw. That leaves Bonini as the only senior centre-back available. 'We’re limited in defence, but we’re exploring alternatives,' said Rubi.
Attacking confidence remains high despite the problems at the back and Rubi remains confident in his team’s attacking prowess: 'Up front, we have players who are doing very well. That can help us maintain balance even with the issues in defence.'
The Vilassar de Mar native also touched on his call for more unified scheduling in Spanish football, a proposal he raised at the recent National Coaches Committee meeting. 'It’s an ongoing issue. We now need backing from the AFE and the clubs,' he stated.
The Indálicos' head coach confirmed that winger Soko, currently with Cameroon, has suffered a minor sprain and could return for the second international match. 'We’re in contact with the national team medical staff. The injury appears minor,' Rubi confirmed.
Rubi ended his media duties by calling for strong home support: 'Last season, the fans were with us until the very end. Our first home game this season was almost full and we hope to see that again. But we know it’s on us to make them feel connected with this team.
