Rubi: ‘You can’t lose a game at home on the counter-attack’

The UD Almería head coach admitted his side were punished for avoidable mistakes against RC Deportivo de La Coruña but insisted his team will bounce back

UD Almería head coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, Rubi, cut a frustrated and resigned figure in the press room after his side’s first defeat of 2026, suffered at home against direct promotion rivals RC Deportivo La Coruña. The Catalan did not hide his disappointment, pointing to missed chances and poor game management as decisive factors.

‘The opponents were better than us, but when you go 1-0 up and have chances to make it 2-0, you can’t lose a game on the counter-attack at home,’ Rubi admitted, reflecting on a night that slipped away from the Rojiblancos.

The Catalan gaffer was particularly critical of his team’s lack of concentration against a threat they had clearly identified beforehand. ‘We made some very glaring errors, even knowing that Deportivo’s strength lies in their transitions and also knowing Yeremay’s characteristics,’ he explained.

Rubi stressed that the turning point came when his side failed to manage their advantage. ‘At 1-0 we should've handled the situation much better. We lost possession and were imprecise. It hurts a lot to lose the way it happened,’ he said.

Despite this setback against the Herculinos, the Vilassar de Mar native struck a note of cautious optimism. ‘We’re not in a good moment, that’s true, but we know we can give much more and we’re going to find the right formula. We’re still at the top of the standings and as players return, we’ll undoubtedly improve,' he concluded.
