Thalys: 'No pressure, just motivation'

The new Brazilian striker feels confident and focused as he begins a new chapter at UD Almería

UD Almería’s newest signing Thalys was officially unveiled at the UD Almería Stadium following his arrival from Brazil. The 20-year-old striker put pen to paper on a 6-year contract with the Club and expressed excitement rather than pressure as he takes on the symbolic No.9 shirt.

'It’s a responsibility to wear the No.9 after a player like Luis Suárez, but I don’t feel pressure in a negative way. I feel it positively, very motivated,' said Thalys at his official presentation, accompanied by his family and agent.

Despite interest from several top European clubs, Thalys believes UD Almería is the right step forward. 'I spoke with my family and we agreed that this was the best option for my footballing future,' he stressed.

The young forward, originally from São Miguel dos Campos, is already settling in well with the squad: 'My team-mates have welcomed me warmly. Lázaro and Léo Baptistão have really helped me and I appreciate that. The city is calm and I like it here,' he added.

Though capable of playing across the front line, Thalys made clear where he feels most effective: 'My position is centre-forward, that’s where I’m most comfortable.'

When asked about his playing style, the Brazilian highlighted his goal-scoring instincts: 'I can contribute in many ways, but above all, I consider myself a good finisher.'

As for football idols, the new signing pointed to a modern Brazilian great: 'I look up to Neymar. I didn’t get to see Ronaldo or Ronaldinho play live.'

UD Almería fans will be hoping Thalys’ motivation and self-belief translate into goals as the young striker begins his European journey.
