The UD Almería midfielder who has just extended his contract with UD Almería and made his senior debut for Serbia, highlights how 'Lopy helped me a lot; thanks to him I've become the player I am today'
Stefan Dzôdić is one of the main talking points at UD Almería, a team currently enjoying a fine run of form with several players making headlines. In the Serbian midfielder's case, however, his importance under head coach Xavier García Pimienta is not the only reason for the attention surrounding him. He has also made his senior debut for Serbia and extended his contract with the Andalusian Club Rojiblancos by a further 2 years, keeping him at the club until 2032.
When he was officially unveiled following his arrival in the summer of 2025, Dzôdić was already determined to fight for a place in the first team. Gradually, he established himself and continued to impress, becoming a key player, a role he has maintained this season.
Speaking at a press conference, the Montpellier-born stated: 'I didn't expect to reach this level so soon'. He went on to explain: 'Last year, I arrived without any professional experience, and Lopy helped me a lot. Thanks to him, I've become the player I am today. One of my goals was to become an important player for the team, but I must keep on working.'
Team-mate Lopy has played a major role in his development, as has his father, who, as Dzôdić pointed out: 'He still watches my games and gives me advice'.
Making his debut for Serbia was 'a dream come true', although he also acknowledged: 'I've now seen what I'm missing to compete with players at that level'. Among those he encountered was former UD Almería player Babić, 'who I've spoken to a lot and who has given me advice. I was sitting next to him in the dressing room'.
Regarding his 2-year contract extension, Dzodic said: 'I'm chuffed because it's essential for my development', while also recognising the security it provides, both professionally and personally.
Asked about UD Almería's league form, he highlighted the significance of their current run, saying: 'Winning 6 games in a row is the reward for the work we've been doing and we're also mentally prepared.'
When asked about the keys to the team's defensive solidity this season, he explained: 'We defend as a team. We're a unit in which everyone works hard.'
The 21-year-old also spoke about head coach Xavier García Pimienta, describing him as someone who is 'very approachable with the players and likes to joke around'. He added that this helps the squad 'stay calm and focused on what we're doing out on the pitch. He gives you confidence'.
UD Almería have recently moved to the top of the table, but Dzôdić believes the team must keep their feet on the ground. 'We shouldn't pay too much attention to it at this stage, with so much of the league campaign still to go, but it gives us confidence and reinforces what we've been doing.'
The immediate focus is now firmly on Saturday's trip to San Sebastián, where the Indálicos will look to maintain their momentum against Real Sociedad 'B'. As Dzôdić made clear, 'we'll go there looking to win, as we always do'.
