The UD Almería head coach highlights his team's valuable draw in a demanding encounter against SD Eibar and praises his side's determination to compete until the very end
UD Almería head coach Xavier García Pimienta began his post-match press conference following the draw by expressing his concern for the UD Almería supporter who fell from the stands while celebrating the team's goal. He wished the fan a speedy recovery.
The gaffer described the encounter as 'a fantastic match between two great teams, featuring good football, chances, corners, fouls… everything a spectator could wish for. Anything could have happened'.
The Barcelona-born knew his side would have to alternate between periods of control and spells of greater difficulty against quality opponents. 'We weren't going to dominate the game from start to finish because SD Eibar were playing at home and have a fantastic team. There were moments when we needed the personality to take the ball away from them, and others when we had to defend together and concede as little as possible', he explained.
García Pimienta also acknowledged the excellent performance of the home side, who pushed UD Almería to their limits throughout the contest. 'The opposition put in an excellent performance. When we had the ball, we played on the front foot and tried to get into the opposition's penalty area. When we had to defend, we knew how to dig in and suffer'.
He added: 'We must appreciate this draw because, even though they scored in the 90th minute, picking up points here is extremely difficult'.
Despite conceding a late equaliser, the gaffer preferred to focus on his players' effort and determination, particularly as they still had a chance to snatch victory in the closing moments.
'I congratulate my players. It's disappointing because we conceded so late, but we never stopped trying. Hopefully, this point will prove to be a very valuable one,' he concluded.
