Chumi: 'I got injured at a really bad moment'
The UD Almería defender re-injures his ankle in tough comeback and faces a month on the sidelines
Injury is a cruel part of the football game. When you return, you hope for the best, but sometimes bad luck finds you again in the form of a familiar pain. UD Almería centre-back Chumi has been dealt a setback after re-injuring the same ankle that had previously kept him out for several weeks. The injury occurred during his return to action in the match against Córdoba CF, where he was forced off the pitch inside 33 minutes.
Reflecting on the injury, the 26-year-old expressed his frustration: ‘It was a bad moment, really bad luck because I stepped on an opponent and I twisted my ankle. From the first moment I knew I had re-injured myself.’
Despite playing through the pain for a few minutes, the defender had no choice but to request a substitution. ‘That's football. What I truly hope is to recover as soon as possible and be available again,’ he added, speaking on the Club’s official radio station.
Head coach Rubi confirmed that Chumi had suffered a grade II sprain, with an estimated recovery time of around one month. However, the full extent of the injury will be clarified after further medical tests.
Chumi's injury adds to the growing list of casualties at UD Almería, with André Horta also sidelined due to a muscle injury that will keep him out for 2-3 weeks. Selvi, Nelson Monte and Fernando missed the trip to Córdoba due to muscle discomforts, though none of their issues are considered serious. Their availability for next Sunday’s match remains uncertain. On a positive note, Álex Muñoz will return to the squad after serving a one-match suspension.
The squad members will hold a recovery session on Monday, followed by a rest day on Tuesday. Training will resume on Wednesday as the team shifts focus to their upcoming clash with CD Castellón.
