Luis Suárez will be operated on by Dr Ripoll and De Prado on Wednesday
UD Almeria Head of medical services Diego Portugal explains on UDA Radio the details of the surgery and the reasons that led to the decision that the player will be taken to the operating room
UD Almería centre-forward Luis Suárez will undergo surgery this Wednesday by prestigious traumatologists Pedro Luis Ripoll and Mariano De Prado, for the fibula fracture in his left leg, a surgery that will be carried out at the Ripoll and De Prado Sport Clinic Quirón located in Murcia city. The Colombian footballer was injured on 1st October, 2023 playing against Granada CF.
A conservative treatment was chosen and in the fixture played against Girona FC (0-0) on 14th January, 2024 and in the following one against Real Madrid CF on 21st January, 2024 (3-2), the 26-year-old striker made his injury comeback playing a few minutes in the final stretch of these games. Nonetheless, the player played through the pain and after the tests carried out, it has been agreed between all parties that Luis Suárez will undergo surgery.
UD Almería head of medical services Diego Portugal explained on UDA Radio, the Club's official radio station: 'At the time we opted for conservative treatment agreed upon by all because it was considered to be the best for the both the player and for the team. Luis Suárez was actually doing well during his recovery so he began to do some ball work on the pitch and eventually rejoined group training. The footballer's own desires and needs of the team led us to increase his workload and give him some match minutes over the last games.'
'When you become match fatigued you have muscle pain because muscle-building tends to protect the bone. We did tests and saw that there was very little left until the bone welding process was complete, which together with that discomfort led us to make the decision to undergo surgery,' added the UD Almería head of the medical services. Mr Portugal also clarified: 'We could've waited a bit more, but we don't know how long it could take.'
Now Luis Suárez will have a plate in bone surgery and the Santa Marta native is likely to be fully recovered in about three months, although this period of time will depend on many factors.
