The Rojiblanco impressive league run comes to an end

UD Almería suffer first defeat in 6 games and fail to score for the third time this season

UD Almería have returned to defeat after putting together a 6-match unbeaten streak in which they collected 16 out of a possible 18 points, thanks to 5 wins and one draw. The Rojiblancos appeared to be on an upward trajectory, especially after climbing into the automatic promotion places, but they were beaten at the Ibercaja Stadium. The Indálicos had gone a month and a half without losing, marking their second-best run of the season.

Their previous defeat had come on 25 January away to SD Éibar, the strongest home side in the division, when they were edged out by a late goal in added time (1-0) on Matchday 23. Incidentally, that was also one of the few occasions, along with Matchday 16, a goalless draw against SD Huesca at the UD Almería Stadium, when they failed to find the net, just as has now happened again on Matchday 30 in Zaragoza. It is only the third time the league’s second-highest scoring side have drawn a blank.

UD Almería will remain among the top positions in the table, but there is no doubt this result represents a setback in their ambitions. As head coach Rubi had warned in the pre-Zaragoza press conference ahead of the trip to the Ibercaja Stadium, ‘if a defeat comes, we must not lose our heads’, stressing the importance of not swinging from optimism to pessimism in such a long and competitive campaign where any team can beat you.

His message was clear: 'Take it game by game. Next up is another away fixture — this time against SD Huesca.'
