Esteban Andrés: The players must forget about the first 10 Matchdays
Back in the day, the UD Almería legend went through a similar difficult situation to the one UD Almería are experiencing at present and states that there is still time to bridge the gap in the table
Former UD Almería goalkeeper Esteban Andrés Suárez between 2008/09 and 2013/14 with 154 games played as a Rojiblanco, is a Club legend, one of the players with the greatest charisma. The Asturias native keeper, currently collaborating with Gol TV, Onda Cero radio station and commenting on the Primera Division matches for the LaLiga TV international broadcast, has chatted to the UD Almería official media about the rough patch that UD Almeria are going through.
In the past 2013/14 campaign, the goalie experienced a similar situation. During the first 10Matchdays, UD Almería had not won a single league game, but the Rojiblancos coached by Francisco back then, achieved a long-awaited victory on Matchday 11 in Valencia (30th October, 2013). 'We greatly celebrated it in the Mestalla midfield, all hugging as if it were the end of league because we knew it was our turning point, as I'm hoping it'll happen this Saturday against UD Las Palmas,' Esteban recalled as expresses his total support.
In fact, last Sunday, the retired goalkeeper commented the meeting at the Montilivi stadium for the LaLiga TV International broadcast: 'The important thing is that the players must forget about the first 10 Matchdays and what has happened so far, so they can focus squarely on UD Las Palmas without letting the previous results affect them negatively.'
On that note, the 48-year-old stressed: 'There's nothing worse than being at the bottom of the pile; now it's all about improving and gaining ground. They must be well aware of it. In addition, they've got a new head coach, there's still time to turn the situation around and bridge the gap in the table.'
'I reckon, from the outside, that they're playing thinking about the consequences that can have the result. On Sunday, they were leading 0-2 at Montilivi and in a few minutes, they saw how the rivals came back from behind. They conceded the first, then the second and the third,' Esteban reflected.
'When I played for UD Almería, we had effective shooting accuracy, but at the same time we also conceded many goals,' he continued before clarifying in this regard: 'We had just earned promotion and we realised that we were silly. We didn't have the nerve, for instance, to slow down or stop the game when we needed to. It's also essential to create a solid team, to be supportive on the pitch, something easy to say, but more complicated to put into practice.'
The Avilés-born goalkeeper, who believes in UD Almería's ability to react because there is a good squad and head coach for it, also sent the fans a message: 'The Rojiblancos' successes have put Almería city on the map following their promotion and top-flight status, which they cannot lose. There's still time for everything and reproaches are useless at the moment. For any footballer, playing at home should be a relief instead of a problem because then, he'll risk more and play better.'
