Rubi: 'We tried everything, but SD Huesca defended very well'
Greater aggression and effectiveness in the final third. 'We completely dominated, we had a lot of shots on goal and crosses, but we lacked a cutting edge,' the UD Almería head coach says. He praised SD Huesca's good defensive work
UD Almería head coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, known as Rubi, seemed resigned to the goalless draw against SD Huesca, which ended the Rojiblancos’ 5-match home winning streak. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the positive aspects of his team’s performance despite the result.
'We tried everything, but SD Huesca defended very well,' Rubi said during his post-match press conference. 'We completely dominated the game, but we also had to be mindful of their counter-attacks. We had plenty of shots on goal, delivered many crosses into their area, but we lacked a cutting edge. We needed to finish those plays more effectively,' he explained.
Rubi also recognised the importance of scoring first in such matches: 'It’s one of those games where if you score and take the lead, you gain a significant advantage. But we have to give credit to SD Huesca, who defended very well, and their goalkeeper made some excellent saves,' he added.
After 5 consecutive home wins, this 0-0 draw came: 'We don’t like drawing away, so we like it even less at home, although my team played well and we can't fault them for anything.'
Following 5 home victories on the bounce, the goalless draw was a disappointment: 'We don’t like drawing away, so we like it even less at home. However, my team played well and I can’t fault them for anything. We’ll keep pushing and we’ll do so on Wednesday in Elda and on Saturday in Andorra.'
Looking at the bigger picture, the Vilassar de Mar native concluded: 'We’re still near the top in 3rd place, but we’re not obsessed with that at this stage. What we focus on is playing well, continuing to improve, and developing our level of play. Today we weren’t up to our usual standard in attack, but defensively, we were very solid and kept SD Huesca under control throughout the match.'
