Juanito: ‘Playing against Real Madrid CF is stressful even winning by two goals’

UD Almería former player recalls one of the most memorable nights in history after scoring the first goal against Real Madrid CF

UD Almería former player Juanito has recalled in the UDA Radio studio the victory achieved by the Rojiblancos over Real Madrid CF in 2008: ‘I remember that we prepared that game against Madrid just like any other, although it attracted far wider media coverage. We got ready for the game in regular training sessions and we did nothing different from the rest of our rivals.’

The Málaga native described how he experienced the goal that opened the scoring: ‘I didn't see the goal so clearly live but then it was seen in the he replay that the ball went in. Just in case, the first thing I did was a gesture of celebrating it because at the time, there was logically no VAR,’ he recalled with a smile while adding: ‘In fact, I went to the corner to block an opponent and not to finish but in the end I ended up scoring. Each footballer plays their role in set-pieces and strategic moves work for many things.’

Juanito reviewed the keys to beating a super team: ‘It's never a good time to face Real Madrid or Barça, in addition to playing a great game you need to have that bit of luck. The key is to do a good tactical job and have some luck because they’re stronger physically and more technical.’ Furthermore, Juanito mentioned that not even with a two-goal advantage on the scoreboard can you relax against the Merengues: ‘I remember it was a stressful game. We all knew that a 2-0 against Madrid was not enough; despite having little time left in the match, they could stage a comeback. The stress didn't end until the ref blew the whistle.’

Regarding the 2022/23 season ahead of UD Almería have, Juanito has acknowledged that they have to show that they are the champions of the Spanish second division: 'Now UD Almería have to show that the same football that they've played in the second division can also work in the top tier. Emery's UD Almería squad were a brave and daring team in both divisions and there was continuity in our style. If I were a player again, I’d take it as an opportunity rather than a final test.’
