Jorge Cuenca: ‘We have to be on the lookout and keep on our toes in Albacete’

The international who feels great after joining Spain Under-21s, does not take the next opponents’ position in the table for granted

The 21-year-old centre-back might have just got back from international duty with Spain Under-21s but international Jorge Cuenca has made it clear to the club’s official media that ‘We have to be on the lookout and keep on our toes in Albacete’ with regard to Monday’s opponents.

The Madrid-born footballer stated that ‘I’m doing as great as before I left, because I was out of action in one of the two games.’ Jorge Cuenca is an experienced regular starter with Spain Under-21s and therefore, he will have to return to the Under-21s national team in March 2021 to participate in the group stage of the European Championship. Meanwhile, he is focusing squarely on UD Almería and on Monday's meeting in Albacete.

On this subject, he pointed out that ‘you can’t trust any team within the second tier, even if they are at the foot of the table. This is true of Albacete. If you relax, these matches get much more complicated, apart from the fact that our adversaries are talented players. It’s a quality team and as I see it…they don’t deserve to be relegated at all. So, we have to be extremely careful and remain very focused.’

The Rojiblanco centre-back, who watched the last match played against Mirandés during the Under-21s team’s get-together, highlighted the importance of the victory, and in this regard explained that ‘we’re in a very good dynamic and that’s exactly the way to follow. Our goal is to extend our winning streak as much as possible.’ Jorge Cuenca also underlined ‘Almeria is a great team, in which players always stick together. Thanks to this, we overcame a hurdle and turned things around when the team was at their worst. In the same way, we’ve managed to remain at the top of the table.’

After taking on Albacete, fixtures will come thick and fast until Yuletide, but Jorge Cuenca is not worry about this situation. In point of fact, he explained that ‘we’ll end up getting used to it eventually’, although he specified that ‘recovery is essential and we’re in good hands with the physiotherapists.’
