Jorge Cuenca starts for Spain in UEFA U21 EURO 0-3 triumph over Slovenia

The UD Almería centre-back played a full 90-minute game in the debut of the Spain U21s team

UD Almeria centre-back Jorge Cuenca started for Spain Under-21s debut in the group stage of the European U21 Championship that has started to be played in Slovenia and Hungary. Spain made their debut in the tournament against one of the hosts, the Slovenian team, who were thrashed 0-3 at the Stadion Ljudski vrt.

Jorge Cuenca teamed up with Valencia CF defender Hugo Guillamón at the heart of the defence and played a full 90-minute game, helping Spain keep a clean sheet against adversaries who repeatedly insisted on playing long balls. The Rojiblanco brilliantly built up play from the back too.

Spain U21s lead Group ‘B’ on three points, while Italy and the Czech Republic picked up one point each after drawing on the opening day. Slovenia got no points yet instead. On Saturday, Spain U21s take on Italy (kick-off 9 p.m. Spain Time) and then, on Tuesday against Czech Republic. After this meeting, Spain will fly back to Madrid and Jorge Cuenca will try to make it home in time for Friday’s league game versus Rayo Vallecano at the Juegos Mediterráneos Stadium (2 April). The Madrid-born international, obviously, will miss out on the involvement in the match against CD Leganés this Saturday and against Andalusian rivals Malaga CF on Tuesday.
