Rubi: 'We suffered, but the victory was well deserved'

The UD Almería head coach dedicates the win to the supporters and highlights the huge effort made by travelling fans who made it to Cádiz after the game suspension

UD Almería head coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia 'Rubi' spoke with satisfaction in the press room at the Nuevo Mirandilla stadium after UD Almería’s historic win over Cádiz CF, acknowledging the difficulty of the Andalusian derby while underlining the value of the result. 'We suffered because of Cádiz CF’s pressure, but the victory we achieved was well deserved,' said the head coach.

In his post-game assessment, Rubi explained: 'In the first half we fell short with just 2 goals, because we had enough chances to have gone into the break with a better lead, although it's true that our rivals pushed at the end of that period'. In the second half, he admitted: 'Cádiz CF applied a lot of pressure and we had no choice but to see the game out by bringing on Rodrigo Ely in defence'. Even so, UD Almería had the chance to seal the win: 'In the end we had the third, but we didn’t take it'.

The Catalan had special words for the travelling support, stressing their commitment to the team. 'We want to dedicate this victory to our supporters. We have to thank them for the effort they have made, because many returned to Almería after learning about the suspension and today they travelled back to Cádiz again to cheer on their team,' he said.

Finally, the Vilassar de Mar native focused on his team’s recent run after a difficult spell. 'After irregular months in December and January, last week we beat Ceuta and that has given us a very positive boost, as well as the fact that we're getting players back, even though the new signings are not yet contributing,' he explained.

Looking ahead, Rubi concluded: 'Now we have 2 consecutive home matches, which will be really tough, but we will see if we can make the most of them because it'd be very important for us'.
