Rubi: 'We achieved a great victory’

The UD Almería head coach praises UD Almería’s win over CD Leganés and looks ahead to title clash with Racing de Santander

UD Almería head coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia 'Rubi' described the victory over CD Leganés as ‘a great win’, highlighting the difficulty of facing ‘very tough opponents who switched to a back 5, just as we did last week in Castellón’. The gaffer made these comments in the post-match press conference following the clash with the Madrid-based side. Despite the importance of the 3 points, he warned: ‘We’ll still need to score many more goals if we want to reach our objective’.

Analysing the match, Rubi explained: ‘We produced a very strong first half, although it was more difficult for us after the break. Defensively, we were flawless because aside from the goal, which came from a set-piece, they didn’t create anything else’.

When pressed on the significance of the result, the Catalan kept a measured tone, stating: 'These are small steps on the road towards our goal’. He added: 'There’s still a long way to go and we must stay fully focused on ourselves’. Next up is the trip to Santander: ‘It'll be exciting to fight Racing Santander for top spot, but whatever happens, nothing will be definitive’.

The UD Almería head coach was delighted with the win for the team, the players and the Club, but reserved special praise for Nico Melamed and the supporters. ‘He’s working extremely well and deserved a moment like this,’ he said of the match-winner. As for the fans, he added: ‘Their attitude was fantastic, they backed us when we needed it most. We all have to move forward together; that’s essential’.
