The UD Almeria captain does not worry about reaching the end of the season as the best keeper because all that he wants is to achieve the long-awaited promotion
Every penalty is a different story and we can also tell stories based on a personal anecdote. In an interview with the Club's official media, UD Almeria goalkeeper Fernando Martínez recounted the penalty saved in Burgos: ‘It all started when, while the penalty was being reviewed by the VAR, Curro approached me and told me that he had the intuition that Valcarce was going to shoot down the middle in a bid to keep up his positive streak of goals. I listened to him because Curro is now on fire after his match-winning goal in stoppage time earned us a victory over Sporting de Gijon. That's how it was, I trusted his word and remained rooted in the middle despite that it wasn't an easy decision to be made. I gave it my all in the rebound so that it wouldn’t happen again like it happened in the last penalty I saved after they scored from that penalty rebound.’ It all sounds logical and with a sly smile, Fernando details: ‘Curro told me that I was the one to be praised even though he was the intellectual author of the save.’
The 30-year-old custodian does not worry much about the Zamora Trophy [Trofeo Ricardo Zamora in Spanish] which is a Spanish football award, however Fernando has also particularly valued the fact of being the best goalkeeper in the second tier in terms of goals conceded: ‘It's something I don't look at. I’ve got no idea. It doesn't worry me. Everyone likes individual awards but I don't think they’re the most important thing. I mean it from the bottom of my heart: the only thing on my mind is the promotion to the top flight.’
Fernando Martínez has looked ahead to UD Almería's next fixture: ‘I’m not keen on predictions because they never come true. We must think that a rival, who is going to make things very difficult because they’re playing to avoid the drop, is coming. These types of teams take care of many details and every move is vital for them.’ The UD Almeria captain is blunt: ‘Let no one believe that it’ll be easy to beat SD Amorebieta.’
Next Saturday, the penultimate home match of the season will be played and the Murcia-born titan between the posts has commented the following in this regard: ‘The fans are showing that they’re fully committed to the team. It’s incredible how involved they got throughout the season. Being Saturday afternoon and given the situation that we’re sure that they’ll respond in the best way, I encourage everyone to come because feeling their strong support will be essential to win the two remaining games at home.’
