Fernando: ‘I'm happy for the team's game and the 3 vital points earned’

The UD Almeria custodian, who played a key role in the victory over CD Tenerife, highlights ‘we knew how to suffer and that’s vital in such tough games’

UD Almeria goalkeeper and captain Fernando Martinez played a key role in the clash played in Tenerife, where the Rojiblancos took a big step forward in their promotion aspirations, largely due to the Murcia-born keeper’s terrific saves. ‘The truth is that I’m very happy with the game that the team has played and with the three points earned, which are vital,’, he stated. In addition, the custodian added ‘we knew how to suffer, and this is something to highlight in a game as tough as this one.’

In the 44th minute, the 33-year-old goalie pulled off a decisive save to block a thumping header from an opponent which was brilliantly parried and pushed over the crossbar by Fernando. When asked about this terrific save, he replied ‘everything looks more difficult from the outside than from the inside. I saw the ball going far, then I touched it with the tip of my finger and I was lucky that it skimmed the crossbar and went wide.’

The UD Almería players gave it their all at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium and Fernando was a titan between the sticks last Monday. ‘I'm 31. I ended up with pain all over my body. I hurt my knee a bit in the first half, I got cramps in my calves in the second and at the end, my adductor…I guess I’m ready to retire,’ joked Fernando.

The UD Almería goalkeeper pointed out that now ‘it's time to enjoy these three huge points, but only for a few hours because we’ve got another very difficult game coming this Sunday. Big games keep on coming, although what lies ahead is terrifically exciting and we want to enjoy it with our fans.’
