Andrés Fernández and Álex Muñoz set to boost UD Almería's promotion bid
Veteran duo ready to make an impact with experience and determination
UD Almería officially introduced two key signings for the upcoming season: veteran goalkeeper Andrés Fernández and versatile left-back Álex Muñoz. The duo, with a combined total of over 800 professional matches, were presented in the club's conference room by sporting director Mariano Blanco, with Club's managing director Mohamed El Assy absent from the event as he is away from Spain.
Both players bring a wealth of experience, but it’s their strong motivation and enthusiasm that they say will drive their efforts as they join the Rojiblancos in their pursuit of promotion.
At 38, Andrés Fernández arrives with more than 500 professional appearances under his belt, and the experienced goalkeeper is ready to make an impact. Reflecting on his debut performance in the season opener against Albacete BP, where the team drew 2-2, Fernández acknowledged mixed feelings: 'It’s not pleasant to concede so many goals, especially on your debut. We need to stay focused and improve, ensuring we don't repeat those mistakes.' His commitment to doing everything in his power to contribute is clear: 'I’m here to help the team, absorb the coach's philosophy, and do my job to the best of my ability.'
Meanwhile, Álex Muñoz, 31, brings over 300 professional appearances and is ready to bolster the defensive line. Having played as both a centre-back and a full-back, Muñoz is adaptable and willing to contribute wherever needed. Reflecting on the team's opening match, where they conceded too many goals, Muñoz emphasised the importance of defensive balance: 'We have a lot of talent up front, but this division rewards teams that find stability at the back. We need to polish certain details and remain solid defensively.'
Both players stressed the importance of team spirit as a cornerstone for success this season. 'Good players are important, but being a true team is essential. It’s during the tough moments that the unity really shows,' said Fernández. Muñoz echoed this sentiment, adding, 'Discipline, responsibility, and respectful communication are what will help us grow as a team.'
The pair, who played together at Levante UD two seasons ago, are now reunited at UD Almería. Their combined experience and shared commitment to the team’s goals are expected to be key assets as they aim for promotion in the highly competitive league.
