Gonzalo Melero: 'Being top of the table rewards the effort we've made'

The UD Almería central midfielder expresses his immense satisfaction with the first half of the season results but states: 'We must be consistent in performance in the second half of the season, which is the main key to achieving our objective.'

One of the captains of UD Almería, Gonzalo Melero, reflected on UDA Radio after the encounter against Cádiz CF about the match, but also shared his thoughts on the first half of the competition, highlighting at all times the progress of the team. The footballer analysed the fixture against the Amarillos: 'In the first half, it was difficult for us to create chances, they came to retreat back and get some counter-attacks. We lacked a little more clarity in the last yards. In the second half, we found ourselves with the penalty and as a result we tried to create more opportunities, they defended very well and it wasn't easy to find spaces within the defence.'

In general terms, the 30-year-old feels extremely proud of the effort of the entire team to turn things around at the beginning of the league and believes that being consistent in performance as a basis to compete to return to the top flight: 'Seeing ourselves at the top gives us enormous satisfaction. It's a reward for all the work we've done and how much we've been involved to change the situation. We must return in January the same way. We want to keep the performances of the last games up. We've changed a lot as a team and we have to try to be consistent, which is the main key to achieving our goal.'

Melero believes that the togetherness of the squad has been key. He also insists that they must return to the competition putting in the same displays as in the last games: 'The unity that the players have now is different from the one at the beginning, it's been seen in games like Málaga CF, CD Mirandés, Racing de Ferrol... We're clear about the path and we hope to continue in the same way in the return fixtures.'

The Madrid native will not be able to feature  in the next LaLiga Hypermotion match against Córdoba CF on 12th January since he was awarded the fifth yellow card against the Cadistas. 'It was against me, I don't know if it was necessary or not, but I made that decision. I'll have to miss a game, but I'll be cheering from the bench. I'm gutted I won't be playing for a long time between the break and the Cup,' said the UD Almería player.
