Rubi: 'We're very happy with the victory and proud to dedicate it to the fans'
The UD Almería head coach reflects on Spanish Cup 0-2 win and unwavering support from travelling fans
Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, 'Rubi', expressed his great satisfaction with UD Almería's 0-2 victory over CF Lorca Deportiva in the first round of the Copa del Rey. The win keeps UD Almería in the competition and the head coach highlighted the importance of dedicating it to their travelling supporters.
'We’re very happy with the victory, which allows us to continue in the tournament and to be able to dedicate it to the fans. It's very important for us that they were able to go home happy,' Rubi said post-match.
Around 1,000 UD Almería supporters made the journey to the Francisco Artés Carrasco Stadium in Lorca, a gesture Rubi deeply appreciated. 'It was a real bonus to look at the stands and see so many fans,' he remarked, thanking them for their unwavering support.
Reflecting on the match itself, the Catalan acknowledged the challenge presented by CF Lorca Deportiva. 'They made it very difficult for us because they competed very well. It was a hard-fought match in which we lacked the finishing touch, even though we had chances to score," Rubi explained.
Rubi made several changes to his starting XI, opting to give players who have had limited league minutes an opportunity. 'They’ve been training very well and we needed a very fresh team,' he said, praising the total commitment and contributions of the younger talents such as Thalys and Pedro Fidel.
When asked about the fitness of star midfielder Robertone, Rubi responded with a calm perspective: 'He's just another member of the squad.'
