Fernando: We're convinced that we can win on Sunday

The UD Almería goalkeeper and captain argues: We're a reliable and confident team at home.

UD Almería goalkeeper and captain Fernando Martínez has sat down with the media to talk about the final stretch of the season and has not hesitated to state: 'We're convinced that we can win on Sunday and make our survival mathematically certain.' He also said: 'We're entering the decisive phase playing host to direct rivals knowing that if we win we'll guarantee our LaLiga Santander status. We're a reliable and confident team at home and we make things very difficult for visitors.'

UD Almería are putting in some brilliant performances this term. Nobody can demy it. They thrashed RCD Mallorca in the Power Horse Stadium and although they lost to CA Osasuna in San Sebastián last Tuesday, Fernando commented: 'The approach adopted against Real Sociedad was pretty good and the team competed really well. We practically didn't suffer when we were 11  well-positioned players. Everything changed after Luis Suárez's dismissal.'

UD Almería and Fernando Martinez are seasoned in this type of situations: 'Apart from the experience, it's essential to control your emotions because games like this are decided by small details.'

The Indálicos are well aware that their fate is in their own hands and on top of that, the 12th Man will make a difference at the Power Horse Stadium. On that note, the 32-year-old titan between the posts stressed: 'We can't control what happens around us or what other teams are going to do, that's why our mentality is to win on Sunday. I'm pretty sure that the fans in this type of matches will be showing their backing throughout the full 90 minutes. It's key to remain calm during the entire encounter; having a cool head is paramount. We'll do better with that and believing in ourselves.'

On the other hand, the skillful keeper reflected: 'Most of us [UD Almería squad] are facing our first season in the Spanish top flight. It’s a scenario that we would've taken at the start of the season. With two games to go, if we win at home, we'll be virtually assured of safety.'

Although victory guarantees their LaLiga Santander status, the Rojiblancos have other ways to stay up, but Fernando prefers not to think about it. In fact, he underlined: 'If we have to wait for other team's results, nobody is going to give away anything. We must win and get it done this Sunday because we're now watching some surprising games. It looks that some teams are a bit relaxed and less competitive.'
