Rubi feels positive about geographical proximity in Spanish Cup draw

The UD Almería head coach expresses optimism as fans can easily travel to Lorca for the tournament first-round tie

UD Almería’s head coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, known as Rubi, has shared his thoughts on the Spanish Cup draw, expressing his support for restoring geographical proximity in the competition. The first-round tie will see Almería face CF Lorca Deportiva at the latter’s stadium, a match that Rubi believes will be a great opportunity for fans to attend.

'It’s a good idea to restore geographical proximity in the Spanish Cup because it makes it easier for fans to travel and support their teams. Our supporters, in particular, have the chance to travel to Lorca and watch the match, which is very important for us. It also helps reduce travel costs,' Rubi said.

Despite CF Lorca Deportiva's lower league status, currently in the Segunda RFEF and sitting at the bottom of the table. Rubi remains cautious about their potential threat. 'They were champions of Group XIII in Tercera RFEF last season and won their last 9 consecutive matches,' Rubi pointed out. 'We respect them greatly, and they will undoubtedly make it difficult for us,' the Catalan added.

The Vilassar de Mar native also acknowledged the importance of the venue, recalling that UD Almería had faced Elche CF in a pre-season match at Lorca's stadium. 'Lorca has a rich footballing tradition and we know the stadium well from our previous visit,' he added, looking ahead to a challenging encounter.
