Fernando: In our situation, this international break is good for us

The UD Almería goalkeeper and co-captain states on UDA Radio that everyone's strong support is fundamental and says that right now what matters is the team as a whole, not the individual performances

UD Almería co-captain and goalkeeper Fernando Martínez has visited the UDA Radio studios to talk about the latest Club news, and has not hesitated to state: 'Although what we [players] want is playing games, in our current situation, this break is good for us. We have a new head coach and he needs time, so these days have been very positive.'

In fact, the Murcia native indicated in this regard: 'The week is being complete and therefore, as I said, not having competition has been good for us since apart from the physical aspect, the intensity you put in because the arrival of a new head coach is a plus, he's introducing the concepts of the game idea that he wants for the team.'

'The head coach has told us that there is no secret formula, but rather work and work, which is what we're doing,' the last-season's Zamora Trophy winner added.

On the other hand, the Rojiblanco shot-stopper explained: 'Every house is built on a foundation and in our case, we have to start from the defence, which is where we have to improve because we have enormous potential up front. When we sort out our weaknesses and we achieve a good result, things will change because we're a good squad able to reverse the situation. I've got no doubts about this.'

Bouncing back from setbacks and failure is vitally important for any team. On that note, the 33-year-old pointed out the following: 'There has been a before-and-after with the Sevilla FC match. Before this meeting, the results weren't good either, but the vibes were. After visiting the Sánchez Pizjuán, we've received blows and we felt down. We needed a change and the new head coach is going to make it happen.'

On an individual level, Fernando stated: 'I've experienced all possible situations in the world of football, so nothing is new to me. We all want to play, but there's only goalkeeper between the sticks in a match and we're three skilful goalkeepers. The three of us get on really well and that's shown at work. What matters is the team as whole, not the individual performances or self-interest.'

Finally, Mr Martínez urged the UD Almería fans to continue to support the team because as he commented: 'It's now when we all have to pull together and feel the support in the stands, at least during the minutes that a match lasts. Then, when it's over, let each one have their own opinion, but while we're playing, the backing from the fans is essential.'
